Let me dig in a little and explain what an efficient kitchen is.
Do you have clutter around the kitchen or on the counters? Do you have items in the drawers that you just haven’t used in months like the 5 spatulas sitting in there? lol Have you ever felt uninspired to cook in your kitchen so you eat out often? Do you end up throwing away leftovers or produce that went bad because you didn’t have time to eat them? Is your grocery bill high and have packages of processed foods that are full of preservatives and high in sugar?
I have been there and that is why I created my efficient kitchen. It literally saved me so much money, time and my sanity.
Let’s look at the components of an efficient kitchen
The major key thing in creating an efficient kitchen is organizing and planning. Once you have a system that works for you and your family, its easy peasey
An efficient kitchen can have different meanings to everyone but essentially has the same components. Some will take it to the next level of preserving there own food, forging plants/herbs and beyond. This is where it gets exciting cause you are always looking for different ways you can be efficient in your kitchen.
Declutter and organizing is the first thing you need to do in the kitchen.
Get rid of things you don’t use or that are broken or have excess of. Organize your items in the cabinets and drawers so they make sense for you and you are not walking from one end of the kitchen to the other all the time. Put all cooking items in a general area together, all prepping things like grater and peelers together in an area. Things that you use but not that frequently can go in a pantry if you have one. You have to do what works for you and your kitchen layout. The point is you don’t want to waste time going back and forth if you have everything you need in one area.
Systems needed to make an efficient kitchen work
The first system is meal planning. Shocking, right? This is essential to all the other systems that you will create. Meal Planning helps with saving time and money. Inventory control is another one that is important. You need to know what food you have and then plan the meals around that. This way you use up things before they spoil or expire. Meal Prep and batch cooking is another system that I use in my kitchen. I always prep my veggies and fruits for easy access. I will tend to make double portions of something like meatloaf. Freeze the second portion for later date or on those busy week nights. I like those dump and cook meals in the crock pot too. The point is that with a little planning and work, then it’s smooth sailing the rest of the way.
How about waste free kitchen as another system to create.
Use up those scrapes for something. Chicken bones and be roasted for chicken stock or veggie scrapes can be for veggie broth. Did you know that eggs shells and Banana peels are good for the garden? They have high in calcium and potassium that plants love. The waste list could go on but I think you got the picture. Use things up and waste less
Creating an efficient kitchen
takes planning and patience and educating yourself. It doesn’t come overnight. It is an ongoing journey and ever evolving. You could even be self sustaining from your own kitchen. The possibilities are endless.
